"The current drop-out rate among American High School students is rising across the country, at an extremely drastic rate: “An increasing number of researchers are saying that nearly one out of three public High School students won’t graduate. For Latino and African-Americans the rate approaches an alarming 50%."
(Time Magazine “Drop-Out Nation” April.2006).

The CLF has opened its new
“Care through College” Learning Center!

An educational after-school facility that takes children in our Adopt-A-Family Program beyond the classroom, and challenges them to change their world. At the Center, kids ages 6-17 decide who they are, what they want to do with their lives, and how to go about doing it!

In 2004, we began tutoring the children in the Adopt-A Family Program at a Center in Venice, and in February 2006, we opened a new “Care through College” Learning Center in Santa Monica. This new facility acts as an incredible, inspiring place of learning and academic focus, where the children receive personalized, one-on-one tutoring sessions, use of our up-to-date computer lab and internet labs, and participate in a special Global AWARE Project.Healthy snacks, organic fruits, juices and sandwiches are also served at the Center.

Our main objective with this program is to make certain that the parents succeed and that each child attends a college of their choice, insuring a secure and successful future.

Over 41 college scholarships have been awarded to date since 1993.

“CTC” Center Activities Include:

One-On-One Tutoring - Tutors from nearby UCLA, Loyola-Marymount, Pepperdine Universities and SMC help the children daily with one-on-one tutoring, Classroom Project Preparation, and homework aid. Our tutors work extensively with the children, cumulatively averaging about 85 hours per month of quality, one-on-one sessions.

A Great Student Incentives Program - Students are rewarded weekly for increases in grades, and As and Bs on tests, homework and projects. Annually, children who receive straight As are allowed to bring their parents on a special, five-day vacation opportunity at a four-star resort, (kindly donated by Mr. & Mrs. Mann!)  and other incentives include gift cards and toys.

Dream Mentors - Children who have identified future goals are matched up with young professionals in the future career of their own choosing.

Global AWARE! & Great Cultural Excursions - A monthly program designed to make children and teens more active in their local and global community-writing letters to the President  & Congress on issues that concerns the group as a whole. Current issues discussed and acted upon are the Darfur region of Sudan, homelessness in Santa Monica, and the global warming problem. Fundraising our projects are also strongly encourages- such as raising funds for an AIDs orphanage in Kenya.

Children also attend monthly outings to art and photo exhibitions, plays, Los Angeles Cultural landmarks, and relevant documentaries. The CLF feels that these excursions are crucial to the child’s cultural development, especially in the season of arts-funding in schools being cut so drastically, as well as the astonishing fact that so many children of this underserved population rarely have the opportunity.

Monthly Family & Mothers’ Nights: Students and their parents get together monthly, where pizza is served, stories shared, and Staff catches up on Family Progress.
